What Rock and Soul
I have to be honest, I didn't actually know who Andrew McMahon was. All I knew is that it induced excited screams from my sister when I told her I was going to be meeting him - Oh my God! He's from Something Corporate and now he's in Jack Mannequin! Come again?
So after doing my research (he's 25, an all-American rock star, was diagnosed with cancer a couple of years ago), I headed over to his hotel and bumped into Joe and Andy from Fall Out Boy in the lobby (wearing sunnies nonetheless - those fluorescent lights are hard to handle). But that's another story.
When you think about rock stars you think about guys in really tight pants, throwing TV sets out of hotel windows, while surrounded by a group of adoring supermodels and wearing sunnies indoors (a la Joe and Andy). So I was surprised to see that Andrew didn't fit any of those descriptions. For one, there wasn't a pair of skinny black jeans in sight - Andrew was dressed in a check shirt and khaki pants, and looked like he'd stepped out of a Gap catalogue (or Seth Cohen's wardrobe). Secondly, he had a very calm, relaxed, down to earth energy about him - no projectile electrical appliances here. As for the adoring supermodels, back off sisters - this guy is married… to his childhood sweetheart - sigh.
When we sat down to talk, I was even more surprised by how honest, spiritual and down to earth he was. He spoke candidly about how battling cancer changed his outlook on life, admitted to being a reformed a-hole and spoke about what makes him truly happy. In short, he was a genuinely nice guy, and I hope he gets all the happiness and success he deserves. Awww!
