Bring back the man

So the next Bond instalment is almost upon us. Picking up where Casino Royale left off, Quantum of Solace promises the usual 007 prerequisites of danger, betrayal, and forbidden love.
It's what we've come to expect of a brand that has become a genre in itself. A formula that has stood the test of time by adapting to the times, politically and socially.

And when it comes to the latter, Bond himself is the masculine zeitgeist. ...

As far as your average weekday goes, Monday morning would have to rate as one of the, if not the, most detested times.

The distinction largely depends on what you got up to on the weekend.

A lazy Sunday evening in front of the television, safe in the knowledge socks and undies are in clean abundance, makes facing Monday morning that little bit easier. ...

Of droughts and flooding rains

My national weather map tells a story that was first penned back in 1911, when Dorothea MacKellar described our land as one 'of droughts and flooding rains.'

Take the past few days, for example.

Parts of Victoria are recovering from cyclonic winds of up to 180km/h. They were whipped up by a strong cold front that also sent surfing grommets into a frenzy on the NSW south coast, driving waves up to six metres. ...

A case for rainy days

Small talk usually involves some mention of the weather. Even more so when you're the weather girl.

Sometimes I receive thanks for endless days of sunshine, as was the case last month when it hardly rained at all.

But for the last few weeks, it has been quite the opposite.

The top three quips in no particular order:
1. 'What's with all this rain?'
2. 'Can't you do something about this weather?'
3. 'I'm over it.'

It's warranted. ...

Since this is my last entry for 2007, I'll summarise the outlook for the next month or so as best I can. In doing so, I'll also touch on the topic of long-range forecasting. These two issues have cropped-up independently in your comments but are closely related.
The former is the most commonly asked question and one many meteorologists are unwilling to answer. What is the weather going to be like next month? The answer is circumscribed largely by technology. ...

Sydney was treated to a spectacular electrical storm last Thursday. A thousand strikes were recorded over the metropolitan area peaking at 30 flashes per minute.

Such a brilliant display may seem like a rare occurrence but it actually happens a lot more than we think. We just can't see it.

Late afternoon is the optimal time for storm activity because of the atmospheric set-up. ...
