I interviewed charismatic James Marsden recently about his new role as the charming Prince in Disney's new flick, ENCHANTED. He is the perfect square jawed, toothy, sparkling eyed prototype of every storybook Princess' dream and, best of all, he's remarkably humble about it. A great sense of self-depracating humour and a great baritone singing voice, too. Why didn't they give him more of a chance to belt it out in HAIRSPRAY !? Talking with some of the creative forces behind ENCHANTED, they're all not-so-secretly hoping that a Broadway stage version will be an eventuality...in the vein of BEAUTY & THE BEAST and TARZAN. If it happens, I hope James and his co-star AMY ADAMS will sign up to do it, too!
Speaking of fairy tale films, can you believe it's been twenty years since THE PRINCESS BRIDE? A new collector's edition DVD set is coming out to commemorate the anniversary which even includes an interactive game among the extra special features. At 41, Robin Wright Penn looks better than even, if that's possible (she also looks spectacular in her computer generated 3-D version in the new BEOWULF movie).
Speaking of musicals, the long rumoured stage version of the classic children's book and cult hit TV series, LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE, is finally becoming a reality: with the original Laura Ingalls actress, Melissa Gilbert, set to play "Ma," and DIRTY DANCING's Patrick Swayze as "Pa." But what about everybody's favorite character, nasty Nellie Oleson (so perfectly played by my pal Alison Arngrim)? I got an exclusive quote from Alison about the project for you. "We've known about this for simply ages. I haven't been able to find out if there is a Mrs. Oleson - man would I like to play her! OHMIGOD!! Can you see that? Melissa as Ma and me as Harriet Oleson? My intention is to be there opening night in the front row!" According to a press release, Pulitzer Prize winner Beth Henley wrote the book and Academy Award-winner Rachel Portman (Emma) composed the music. The producers are hoping for a national tour in spring 2008 before it lands in New York.
Movies, television and theater...it's all one big melting pot these days. So while TV Writers and Broadway Stage hands continue to strike, I pose the question: What are some of your favourites you'd like to see transformed to another medium? GILLIGAN'S ISLAND, the movie? THE JETSONS, musical comedy stage show? AMERICAN GANGSTER, the made for TV mini-series?
