Blow wave secrets

For a sleek finish
Even the most rebellious curls and kinks can be tamed into a silken mane with the right tools. Just follow these simple steps:

1. Start by combing a smoothing cream through clean, towel-dried hair. We recommend Kerastase Lait Nutri-Sculpt Smoothing Hair Foundation.

2. Dry in sections, starting at the back and working forwards. Keep the rest pinned out of the way with a large clip.

3. Using the Mason Pearson The Junior Paddle Brush, pull each section tight, then guide your dryer from the roots to the tips, keeping the nozzle pointed downwards to encourage the hair to lie flat.

4. Finally, mist with a glossing spray. We love L'Oreal Professionnel Tecni.art Pure Gloss Shine Mist.

For extra volume
To give tired tresses a va-va-voom injection:

1. Apply a volumising serum like ARTec Kiwi Coloreflector Blow Up Volume, $24.80, to damp hair, paying attention to the roots.

2. Tip your head upside down and blast the roots with the dryer for a few seconds.

3. Dry hair in sections using a large, round barrelled brush. We recommend GHD Anti-Static Brush in Size 3.

4. Finish with a spritz of holding spray. Toni & Guy Blow-Dry Spray, $24.99, maintains the look without making your hair stiff.

For soft, bouncing curls

1. Apply styling lotion to wet hair and blast with a dryer, one section at a time, until almost dry. Brush through with a round, bristle brush.

2. Starting at the nape of your neck, roll sections of hair under and around hot tongs, gently pulling out the tongs once each curl has set.

3. Carefully divide your hair into four sections: top, back and one at either side.

4. Wrap your hair over and around velcro rollers, curling the top and back sections in towards your neck, and the sides towards your face.

5. Wait half an hour, then remove the rollers, tip your head forward and gently tease the roots with the round brush. Then shake your hair loose and brush the ends lightly.

If you haven't got the time or energy to blow dry your locks every morning, here are a few tricks to keep your 'do looking divine:

- Avoid heavy pomades, leave-in conditioners and shine serums that can make hair appear oily after a day or two.
- If you do apply product, ensure you comb it through evenly.
- The less you mess, the longer your blow-dry will last.
- If you fidget in your sleep, a satin pillowcase can help avoid morning-after mayhem. Tame strays with a straightening iron.
- Keep your hair loosely tied back while exercising and use a towel to blot perspiration around the hairline.
