Is it okay to like an older guy?

Dear Nate, is it okay to like an older guy? Curious, QLD.

What is it with girls and older guys? Is it because they appear more mature? Is it because they are more experienced and more confident with themselves? Is it because they have a five o'clock shadow? Or is it the age old reason, they have a car? We don't understand it but you ladies just dig dudes with a couple of years up on you.

It is ok to date guys a bit older than you. In fact most girls do at some stage. Here is a rough guide however, to dating an older man.

One to two years older
Your parents won't feel comfortable with him, but he will be the envy of all your friends. You will appear very mature and very ahead of your time. He might even have a car! But be wary, he might not be as serious about the relationship as you are, so tread carefully. Otherwise you might find yourself out of the Subaru and back on the sidewalk.

Two to three years older
Ok now it is getting a little weirder. This is year ten dating year seven kind of stuff, which is skating on thin ice. Your parents will hate him. Your friends might be worried about the two of you and whether he is going to break your heart. He probably even has a nicer car, but don't let this fool you! Cars are not an indicator on how reliable a person is, even if their car never breaks down. Be careful.

Three to four years older
Ok hold your horses! This is Tom Cruise/Katie Holmes crazy now. He has a car. Big deal! Your friends will hate him. You won't be able to trust him! Don't tell your parents!

Four years or more
His wife and kids are probably wondering why he isn't home for dinner yet.

If you are going to go out with an older guy, just be careful. They may be not as interested in you as you are them. They are probably more worried about their toupee falling off.
