Episode 32 - September 21

Sep 26 03:51pm

Johanna and the rest of the team at Better Homes and Gardens pay a visit to St Mark's Lutheran Primary School at Mount Gravatt in Brisbane, Queensland. This tiny school of just eleven students is the winner of the Westfield Shop for Your School Competition. The kids will take off on an excursion while the team gets together to do a mammoth makeover for the school as a surprise for when they return!

There's nothing small about this project - the school has one big classroom with absolutely everything in it!

Tara focuses on re-organising the current space and creating heaps of storage for all the kids bits and pieces. But this isn't just about changing the layout, she also creates an underwater themed classroom to inspire the kids. There'll be lots of bright fabric hanging from the ceiling to make this really feel like an underwater haven for learning.

What kid doesn't want to get outside and enjoy a new playground? Jason and Rob get busy in the garden creating a fun environment for the kids. Jason builds two raised gardens and will be filling them with stacks of veggies and citrus trees so the kids can enjoy picking fruit. He'll also install water tanks to keep the plants healthy. Rob's going to build a new deck to create an outdoor classroom and they'll also be putting down a brand new rubber soft fall to make the area safe for kids.

Ed whips up a healthy fried rice on the BBQ - perfect for feeding the masses at school fetes. With a couple of magic ingredients he'll have the kids eating veggies without even knowing they're there!

Karen hops on Rob's new deck to cook lemon pancakes. The best thing about these pancakes is that you can make them ahead of time and just re-heat them when they're ready to serve.

To fit in with the underwater theme that Tara is creating in the classroom, Dr Harry brings along three different pets that all have one thing in common - water. These pets are fluffy baby ducklings, land hermit crabs and Siamese Fighting Fish. The kids will learn all about how to look after these pets, find out some of their interesting features and most importantly get to pick them up to check them out for themselves!

Hi, I'm also a primary school teacher and thought the previous show on creating a sea within the classroom was fantastic. Would it be possible to get a copy of the sea animal craft and decorating ideas that were used in this episode. I have noticed that this classroom makeover isn't in the latest BHG magazine, will it go into another one at all? Thank you for a fantastic show and look forward to hearing from you. Cheers.
