Stressed cockatiel

Problem: Only one part of this bird's anatomy hasn't been de-feathered and that's his head. Where have all the feathers gone?

Solution: This poor little bird is so bored it has resorted to plucking out its own feathers and now has a compulsive behaviour disorder. Now just like you and me, birds need to have things around them they find interesting. Compared to the toys the children in this house possess the bird hasn't got much - a mirror, a bell, a bit of white stuff hanging down inside the cage and a couple of miserable sticks. And it doesn't end there.

Birds also need variety in their diet to make sure they get all the nutrients they need. You'll find some of the best foods for them are right outside your front door (such as grevillea or bottlebrush) or in your fridge. You can feed birds just about anything you'd feed yourself except for a couple of things. No no no to avocados and all members of the onion family...so shallots, onion and garlic. Just about all veggies are OK but I'm not too keen on potato because it can go green. And not too much in the way of oranges and lemons that tend to give them diarrhoea. But they do like a bit of banana occasionally.

If we also fill the cage with toys, branches, rocks and all sorts of things I think the bird can be cured of its disorder. We need to keep filling this cage full of junk so that it can chew on other things and not itself. This cage has to look like the council tip!

Dr Harry,

We have one female cockatiel, Tango, she is approximately 2 years old and very much the prima donna. She would continually call out (screech) when I or my two boys were not near her and drove my husband crazy. We thought the solution may companionship and so introduced an 8 week old male which died within two months. After talking to the breeder we feel Tango may have nipped his claw, it got infected, he stopped eating and died, which was heart breaking for us all, in hindsight a

Hi Dr. Harry,
I have a 3 yr old female cockatiel that is lutino pearl in colour. My father built a stand for her that stays in the kitchen and it doesn't have any sort of enclosure. She can fly all she wants. Lately my sister has got 2 budgies that stay in a cage and my cockatiel always has to be an their cage watching them. Their cage can be right next to her or at the other side of the room and she must be near them. One of the budgies is so active and she chases her around the cage and pluck

Hi Dr Harry,

I have two Cockatiels both Male about 4yrs old. The first (Bangers) I hand reared from birth and is rather tame. I recently moved out of home and left him with my brother. At my new house I got the second bird (Billy) off a friend who didn't want him. He wasn't very tame but has become more friendly since moving in. We have now got both birds at the one house. I think Billy is in love with Bangers and follows him everywhere. Bangers isn't too impressed with this and usaully flies

Hi Dr.Harry

a few days ago my beautiful cockatiel sunny died from being attacked by a cat. now we have 8 birds. 7 of them are not taimed and we need to find homes for them. we feel it is not safe here and they arn't taimed anyway. we wanted to give them to a zoo so they could live in a nice healthy environment, but we are pretty sure they don't take in cockatiels. do you know any tree filled places that we could give them away to? or a very nice home with lots of room for them to fly around?

hi dr harry, we have a 2 yr old staffy who seems to like roaming the streets of our lovely town. so much so that he jumps the front fence which just happens to be a pool fence. he can quite easily do this and it worries us that he may not return one day. we have now got another younger staffy for him to play with but he still jumps. he has heaps of toys and my partner spends at least an hour and a half outside playing with him and he is ran most nights. any help you could give would be wonderful
