| An inspired selection of tiles is the way to get stunning results when you make a mosaic pot |
This beautiful mosaic pot is a true work of art. The green and orange colours - accentuated by the wavy band of coppery tiles - hint at exotic landscapes.
You'll need
24cm terracotta pot
Bondcrete (waterproofing agent)
Chalk pencil
Glass mosaic tiles
Tile nippers
Goggles (to protect your eyes when cutting tiles)
Water-resistant and flexible tile adhesive
Grout
Rubber gloves
Cloth sponge
Dry cloth
Here's how
1.Apply two coats of Bondcrete paint to the inside of the pot (two coats will seal the porous terracotta and prevent water seeping out onto the underside of the mosaic, thus weakening it).
2.Pencil your chosen design onto the pot.
3.Cut the tiles into uneven pieces using tile nippers. Borders can be made by cutting tiles on the diagonal to give triangular pieces (you will need good quality nippers to do this). Always wear goggles when cutting tiles.
4.To fix the tiles, spread adhesive over a small section of the pot and lay mosaic pieces onto it. The tiles may slide out of place until the adhesive sets and so you will have to tilt the pot on its side and work in sections. You may want to do the top edge of the pot first to ensure the tiles fit evenly. Allow each section to set before working your way around the pot.
5.Once tiles are in place, let the pot dry for 24 hours before grouting.
6.Wearing rubber gloves, mix the grout according to the directions on the packet. Apply the grout over the pot, ensuring that all the spaces between the tiles are filled. Sponge off excess grout.
7.Let the pot dry for 24 hours. Using a dry cloth, polish the pot to remove any powdery cement film.
8.Allow the pot to dry for a further 48 hours in a warm, dry place before using it outdoors.
