Question: We've just finished completely renovating our house and it's virtually unfurnished. We now want to start decorating but every interior designer we speak to says "tell us what you want". The problem is, we don't know what we want! Can you tell us where to start?

Answer: A great place to start is with a 'mood board' or 'mood book'. Grab a pin board or scrapbook and begin sticking pages from magazines, newspapers, colours from ribbons, yarns, paint sample strips (free at your local hardware store), fabric swatches (also free from fabric stores), or anything at all that you like the look of! Stick them altogether like a big collage. After a short time, this will begin to show you what kind of colours and themes interest you. This is a brilliant source to show an interior designer. Study the pictures and ask yourself questions such as "do I like the look of those curtains or just the colour? ", "would I like a couch in that style but in a different fabric? " etc. And don't forget to take your 'mood book' shopping with you (or a specific picture/sample from the mood board) to match up colours and styles when you're at the shops.

Question: Can you tell me how to perfect folding a fitted sheet?

Answer: Folding fitted sheets is easy once you know how. Lay your sheet on a flat surface right side down and the elasticised corners facing up. Take hold of the top right corner, turn it inside out and tuck it inside the bottom right corner. Do the same for the left side. At this point, you'll have the top half of your sheet tucked into the bottom half. Now fold your sheet in half and then into thirds. If you're folding a double or queen sheet you may want to fold it one more time. Don't forget, practice makes perfect!

Question: I'm trying to decorate my home for less. Can you tell me the your top couple of decorating tips for us budget-conscious people?

Answer: No problem! Being strapped for cash doesn't mean you have to compromise on style. Think laterally and you'll have a gorgeous home in no time.

1. Disguise tatty sofas or armchairs with loose covers. See our instructions on how to make a slip cover or visit your local fabric store for a pattern.

2. Use leftover fabric from loose covers or fabric remnants to sew up some co-ordinating cushion covers. See our beautiful button and tie cushion instructions here.

3. Shop at discount variety and homeware stores and even Asian supermarkets (for attractive bowls, paper scrolls and interesting ornaments). Scour restoration centres, buy online (think eBay and the Trading Post), read the classifieds and always keep an eye out for roadside finds or moving-house sales.

4. Bring the outdoors in! Cut flowers from your garden and bring them inside. Take a chipped kitchen bowl and plant an attractive cutting from the garden to make an immediate indoor plant.

And remember, decorating is all about you and what you like. Take your time and enjoy the process!
