Set a smart table. The only skill you need is the ability to machine-stitch in straight lines.
Makes four. Choose reversible fabric for these crisp looking placemats. When choose a fabric for the serviettes look for colours that complement the placemats.
You'll need1m x 137cm twin weave fabric
Sewing thread
Scissors, pins.
Here's howNote 1cm seam allowance
1. Cut out four pieces fabric 50 x 68cm.
2. Press under 1cm seam allowance on all raw edges.
3. With folded seam allowance facing up, fold down corners so flap edges measure 7cm. Refer to diagram 1. Press.
4. Open out corner flaps. Fold corners in half, seam allowances facing out, and stitch along press line. Refer to diagram 2. Trim excess from corners; press seam open and turn to right side.
5. Stitching through all thicknesses, edge-stitch border in place.
Serviettes
You'll need1m x 115cm cotton fabric
7.6m bias binding
Sewing thread
Scissors, pins.
Here's how1. Cut each serviette 47cm square and cut bias binding into 1.9m lengths
2. Round each corner by using lip of teacup as a guide.
3. Place first fold of bias next to cut edge of serviette, right sides facing, and pin or baste without stretching.
4. Where bias joins, fold over one end and overlap the other end by 1cm at the join.
5. Stitch bias to fabric, following bias fold. Roll remaining bias over cut edge of serviette and finger press. Pin or baste.
6. Machine-stitch through all thicknesses, catching upper and lower folded edges of bias while fully encasing the raw edge.
